>SUITCASES / DAYPACKS: A suitcase is a longterm investment - and you get what you pay for. Look for the type that is maximum carry-on dimensions, and that will roll, carry, and boasts pop-out backpack straps. Best in the business: Eagle Creek. Look here for daypack, moneybelt, pouches, etc. needs as well. As mentioned - one suitcase and one daypack per person. Our daypack system: One person carries the 'optics daypack' - padded, holding binos, scope, tripod, camera (more on these below). One person carries meds, travel books, travel documents, overnight toiletries, immediate needs. Child carries own games, books, snacks, sweater for chilly plane, etc. Note: Be aware - despite standardized carry-on dimensions, occasionally some airlines will force a gate-checked bag. Also, it may be necessary to rely on your burlier or taller aircraft cabin neighbor to assist in overhead stowage. Smile a nice thanks. >BINOCULARS: Birders tend to be affectionately attached to their binos. However, if you're in the market and plan on traveling - we've found 8x32's to be a good size and weight. Don't forget pouch, raincover, lens cleaning supplies. Best optics supplier and consult: Eagle Optics. >SCOPE / TRIPOD: If you're traveling with a group or guide, chances are you don't need to lug one along. If not, think carefully about the type of birding required, and whether or not you will use one enough. Between scope and tripod, they do add extra weight, though there are lighter weight, smaller options out there. Again, consult with Eagle Optics. >CAMERAS: Lots of choices here - pocket, SLR, etc. Whatever your preference, remember to check charging/battery situation against destination country's voltage/current/outlet style. May need converter and will probably need plug adaptor (readily available in global kits). Two batteries are useful for mid-day swap-outs. And remember to check storage. This is a big issue. Used to be we all carried rolls and rolls of film in lead-lined bags. Now one needs extra memory cards or a hard-drive device on which to download. |
